Community Paint Day: Joy In The Shadows

On October 4, 2025, the Plaza Midwood community came together for a Community Paint Day, marking the official beginning of the streetscape installation. Neighbors of all ages gathered at Fulton Avenue and Roland Street to put paint to pavement and begin transforming the neighborhood entrance together. Hosted in partnership with the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association and funded through the City of Charlotte, the event gave community members the opportunity to move from simply imagining the artwork to physically becoming part of its creation.
Sixty-two neighbors participated throughout the day, volunteering their time and energy to help beautify a space they pass through and share every day. With brushes and paint in hand, participants worked alongside the artist to make their own marks on the streetscape, contributing to an artwork that will remain part of the neighborhood long after the paint day ended.
Beyond the painting itself, the day became an opportunity for neighbors to connect. People shared stories, memories, and laughter as they worked side by side. Children and adults participated together, creating an atmosphere that felt like a neighborhood celebration. The act of painting together created opportunities for people who may not have otherwise crossed paths to meet, talk, and learn more about one another.
This day became a beautiful expression of the spirit of Plaza Midwood. It was more than a day of painting; it was about creating something that belongs to everyone.
