Title: Winter

Year: 2022

Commissioned by: Credit Karma

Location: Charlotte, NC

Type: Interior mixed-media fiber mural

Materials: Fabric, acrylic paint, handmade paper, upcycled thread

Dimensions: 12' 6" × 13' 11"

Commissioned for Credit Karma's Charlotte headquarters, this mixed-media fiber mural was created for the "Winter" floor of the new office. Each floor of the building was inspired by a different season, with the winter theme informing the mural's cool blue palette and soft white textures.

Palmisano began the mural in her studio, where she painted and embellished fabric before bringing it onsite for installation. Once on the wall, she continued building the surface with handmade paper, upcycled thread, acrylic paint, and additional layers of fabric. Working directly on the wall allowed the piece to grow through the installation process, combining the softness and texture of fiber work with the scale of a mural.

About the Work

Clouds appear often in my work, and I incorporated them here as a reminder to dream big. I wanted the mural to have the softness and quiet of winter without creating a literal winter scene. Color and texture do most of that work, with cool blues, layers of fabric, fluffy white forms, loose threads, and handmade paper creating a surface that changes as you move closer to it.

I have always been interested in pushing fiber work beyond the places we expect to find it. This piece gave me the opportunity to bring the materials and processes of my smaller textile work directly onto the wall and let them take up space at an architectural scale.
