The Circle at Seversville Park
A new public art installation is landing at Seversville Park, in Historic West End Charlotte. The Circle at Seversville Park adds an exploratory, interactive aspect to this intimate public space while embodying themes of connection, nature, and neighborhood identity. With organic forms and a soothing color palette, this installation is designed to create a meditative space that invites visitors to linger in the nature that’s right inside their neighborhood.
ellafae, working with artist & fabrication partner Matty Caple, and supported by a team of collaborators, is creating this landscape-spanning installation with multiple sculptural elements placed throughout the park. The pieces intertwine with their environment, and highlight their relationship to the adjacent surroundings, including changes in light, shadow, reflection, and natural features.
As ellafae’s public art pieces are rooted in community engagement, she bases many of her final design decisions on the input from neighborhood community members. Contributions are gathered through her interactions at community events, conversations with active park visitors, and an open online community submission portal. These contributions inform final form, texture and color choices of the installation.
The Circle at Seversville Park encourages viewers to notice nature’s details and further discover their own surroundings on a daily basis, while adding to the natural beauty of the space for years to come.
About the Process
In Person
At community events and pop-up engagement in the park, neighbors can choose a paper butterfly and add color, words, drawings, or other marks to represent themselves, their household, or their family. The butterflies will come together in a community display, and the colors people choose will help shape the final color palette for the sculptures.
Online
Neighbors can also share a photo of something in nature around the neighborhood that catches their eye. These photos will create a collection of community-sourced inspiration for artists ellafae and Matty Caple to draw from while developing the sculptures.
