These artists have been busy bees!
K-2nd grade students selected a magical bird last week and imagined the kind of nest it would want. Using their birds’ wishes as inspiration, they carefully chose colorful paper and ribbon and got to work building unique nests. Some artists tore their paper by hand, while others used scissors. Some thoughtfully arranged their strips, while others layered them like confetti or crumpled pieces for added texture. A few even created bird food, and some wrapped paper around pencils to add structure and form hanging vines from their nests.
This week, they began writing and illustrating books to read to their birds. We started by sketching storyboards, then moved into drawing and writing their stories. Next week, we’ll continue developing these books and add a few special details to make their birds even happier.
Last week, 3rd–5th graders began creating their 3D worlds! Their ideas have been wonderful to hear and see. They’re exploring how point of view shapes an artwork and learning how to build layered, immersive projects of their own design. Some artists are designing their worlds from an inside-looking-out perspective, while others are working from the outside looking in.
During Art Club, students engage in guided projects while still having the freedom to create what inspires them. They work through the creative process, experimenting and problem-solving along the way. When something doesn’t go as planned, they’re encouraged to rethink, adjust, and try again, with support and guidance as needed.
